The
2004 Butkus Award®
winner was Derrick Johnson, Texas. The announcement
was made during a black-tie Butkus award®
Gala at the Renaissance Resort at Sea World and personally presented
by Dick Butkus.. Johnson lead Texas with 128
tackles this season and ranked third on the school's all-time
tackle chart with 456. Johnson a 2003 consensus first-team All-American
and two time All-Big 12 pick, posted 19 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback
pressures, one interception, eight caused fumbles , the latter
a Texas single-season record. Johnson becomes the Longhorns' first
Butkus Award® winner.
Johnson
was also a finalist for the 2004 Bednarik and Lombardi Awards
and the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, as well as the only
defensive player listed among10 "players to watch for the
Walter Camp Player of the Year honor.
DACO
presented Johnson with Butkus Award®
during the gala Johnson's family and defensive coordinator, Greg
Robinson were in attendance. Also on hand were the other finalists
Matt Grootegoed (Senior USC), and Ahmad
Books (Sophomore, Virginia).
The
Butkus Silver Anniversary Award winner, George
Cumbly, Oklahoma was also honored. |
