The 2002
Butkus Award® winner is EJ Henderson of the University of Maryland during
the black-tie Butkus Award® Gala at the Renaissance Resort at Sea World of
Florida. Henderson is the first Butkus Award® winner from the University of
Maryland, and the third from the Atlantic Coast Conference. He is the first ACC
winner since Florida State's Marvin Jones in 1992. Henderson, Sr. # 42, had 123
unassisted tackles, 40 assisted tackles for a total of 163 total tackles on the
year to go along with 15.5 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks and 2
interceptions.
DACO presented Henderson with the Butkus Award® during the
gala. Henderson's family and his head coach Ralph Friedgen were all in
attendance. Also on hand were the other finalists Teddy Lehman (Oklahoma, Jr.)
and Courtney Watson (Notre Dame, Sr.), who were accompanied by their families
and head football coaches Bobby Stoops of Oklahoma and Tyrone Willingham of
Notre Dame. The Butkus Silver Anniversary Award winner, Lucius Sanford (Georgia
Tech/Buffalo Bills), was also honored.
